Affiliate Recruitment

In this important section we discuss how to recruit affiliates for your programme and assist them so they become active and become a lifelong sales partner.

If you have implemented the ideas discussed in previous sections, your programme should be very attractive to affiliates and signing them up will be easier. However on average it can take between 2 – 3 months for an affiliate to be contacted and for them to become active (making sales). This could be because they’re a content based website and rely on natural search engine rankings to promote your products or service. As you know it can take a few days to a number of months for the search engines to index particular pages of a site. Also an affiliate sometimes need to build up trust with new merchants and may not respond to the first call you make in to them.

So where do you find affiliates? If you have joined an affiliate network, then the first place to look is here. Chat to your account manager and find out which affiliates you should be targeting. They will send you a list to contact or may do this on your behalf. However they are limited to affiliates already on their network, so you will need to go outside the network to recruit large numbers of affiliates. Remember your network account manager manages multiple merchants, sometimes over 50 depending on the vertical and won’t have time to recruit affiliates on a daily basis. Most will sign up affiliates to your programme and also to your competitors. It’s not uncommon for one affiliate to be recruited into multiple programmes at the same time.

Check the search engines: Make a list of keywords that describe your products or services and your competitor’s brand names. Type them into the search engines below and check the first 5 pages for each keyword, at each search engine.

Visit each site and see if it’s an affiliate site. You will spot this as they may be running adverts that relate to your products or service and you may find affiliate links on some of the pages. Don’t disregard sites with no affiliate links or adverts, you could have found a site which has not considered placing affiliate links on their site yet and could be a potential goldmine.

See which PPC ads are running and find out if they direct to affiliate sites.

Post details about your programme to http://www.affiliates4u.com and worthwhile affiliates will see and join.

Search blog directories for sites which are a good match for your brand, contact them with a view to including your company or products in their site.

Advertise for affiliates on PPC search engines and other affiliate resource sites such as Fraser’s blog – http:// www.affiliateblog.co.uk.

Attend affiliate shows and events, normally the top affiliates attend such events and after a chat may decide to promote you over your competition.
